Josip Kašman Days

A famous opera singer, born in Mali Lošinj in 1847, he performed on all world-famous opera stages, including the opening of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. During these days there will be numerous seminars and concerts organized by Zagreb Opera Studio.

Along the pathways, across stonewalls and over the terrain down to the sea, wherever a human foot or sheep’s hoof has trod, lashed and shrivelled by the bora, fig trees crouch offering their honeyed fruits to the wandering traveller.
The fig, along with sage-honey, was the only source of sugar in the past: long forgotten, it has now made a comeback to the Lošinj menu in the form of all sorts of sweet delicacies.

It is held every first Saturday in month in pre- and post-season on the main town square from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The festival offers autochthonous island products (olive oil, honey, liqueurs, jams,…) and the original souvenirs from Lošinj.
World Championship in Spear-Fishing

Mali Lošinj has a year-long tradition of spear-fishing. Back in 1950 the first gun for spear fishing arrived to Mali Lošinj as a new fishing equipment, making way to a new category – spear-fisher, that had not been mentioned in the Sea Fishing Act of that period.

Myrtle (lat. Myrtus communis) is a small shrubbery-like tree whose perennial green leaves abound with the much sought-after essential oil. Its dark-blue berry-like fruit ripens from October and from them mouth-watering liqueurs are prepared in the Garden of Fine Scents: light-coloured «Dobri dupin» – Playful Dolphins» and dark-coloured «Apoxiomen».

28. Arbunada (Sea-bream Fishing)

The hunt for sea breams is performed in an old-fashioned way, by hand from the boat, the only one that is kept on the Adriatic, of course there is a festivity in the evening and the tasting of caught sea breams.
Days of Bread

The Day of Bread and Gratitude for fruits of land, it is celebrated with an exhibition of bakery products and special kinds of bread and occasional entertaining programme. It is held on the main town square in Mali Lošinj, beginning at 10 a.m.

Fragrant November – Olive, Dog Rose and Quince

The olive is the primordial maternal provider of the island – along with the vine, figs, sheep and fish. With rapid tourist development of Lošinj in the second half of the 19. century, care of the island’s olive groves which had been nurtured from time immemorial was neglected.

Day of the Town of Mali Lošinj

The beginnings of Mali Lošinj date back to 12th century when twelve Croatian families came to the island of Lošinj and settled in the eastern cove St. Martin. Today St. Martin is patron saint of the town and this day is marked by numerous sports and entertaining festivities.
Squid Day (Lignjada)

This is organized in the island of Unije, on the occasion of St. Andrew, patron saint of Unije. Everyone can participate, and if you do not have your own boat, the organizers will provide you a boat-ride man. After the competition and weighing the catch, there will be an award giving ceremony and folk festivity.
Fragrant December – Pine, Agave and Prickly Juniper

More than 900 island autochtonous types of wild intoxicating plant seeds are already dormant in the stony cracks and fissures under the thorny evergreen juniper tree, scattered by howling Autumn gales. Only the Agaves are awake along the lovers’ pathways from Rovenske to Kriške, notwithstanding the strong Autumn gusts.
Children’s festival „Mići gardelini“

This is a children’s festival that takes place every year, on the eve of “children’s holiday”, the day of St. Nicholas. The children from Mali Lošinj perform numerous famous music hits. The festival takes place in Mali Lošinj in the cinema Vladimir Nazor.

New Year’s Cup in Spear-fishing

The enthusiasts from SRD “Udice”, the organizers of spear-fishing competition, came up with an idea to organize a spear-fishing competition on the Eve of New Year. While the entire Europe is covered in snow, Mali Lošinj has a very pleasant weather, so this is the way to draw the attention of the public and guests on the mild climate of Lošinj. The idea was realized in 1959 and this tradition of holding New Year spear-fishing competitions has remained active up to today.
